If you’ve booked a spring photo session with a photographer, you’re probably wondering what to wear for spring family pictures. After all, you want to look your best in the photos! You don’t have to worry about getting everything perfect—as long as you follow a few basic guidelines, you’ll have beautiful images that document the joy and beauty of this particular time of year. As an Indianapolis family photographer, I’ll share a few tips to help.
What to Wear for Spring Family Pictures
Moms, the upcoming portrait session will be the perfect opportunity to show off your spring style! Wear something classic and timeless. My favorites to photograph are light solid, textured, or dainty florals. Here are some of my favorite shops for mom’s dresses for spring:
- Free People has long and flowy styles that complement multiple body types. This dress is one of my favorites in my client closet.
- Baltic Born is great for florals and has sizes up to XXXL! This dress has a beautiful texture for photos!
- Morning Lavender – perfect for dainty florals. This v-neck maxi dress is the ideal color for spring!
- Doen for higher-end pieces. Their pieces photograph beautifully.
- Rachel Pally – I haven’t seen this dress look bad on anyone. It’s magical.
Where to Shop for the Rest of the Family
Once you choose a dress, then style the rest of the family. Here are some of my favorite shops for babies, kids, and dads:
Choosing a Photographer for Spring Photos
Choosing a photographer can be an exciting experience because you know the photos will become cherished heirlooms. Take your time to look for the one that will best document the moments you want to remember forever. Look through their portfolio and read past client reviews. Also, ask about their packages and pricing information to ensure you get what you envision at a price that suits your budget.
If you choose a more full service photographer, your session includes complimentary access to the client closet and styling assistance for the whole family. The client closet has curated dresses that photograph beautifully. Once you choose a dress, I’ll assist you in styling the rest of the family, which usually includes piecing together some items from their closets and filling in the gaps with new things as needed.
Consider Location When Choosing Colors
The first step is deciding on the location for your photo shoot. Is it going to be at a park? At a city center? Once you choose a place, you can start planning what everyone should wear. For instance, if you’re shooting outdoors in a grassy area, consider having everyone wear shoes that don’t mind getting dirty. Lighter colors contrast and photograph well against green spring grass (think of all the beautiful wedding photography photos you see in the spring with white dresses against spring florals – swoon)!

Choose Colors That Compliment Each Other
Next up is color coordination. It doesn’t have to be matchy-matchy but try to stick with colors that complement one another and avoid clashing patterns or prints. Think about the season, too—spring is the perfect time for dresses with florals, pastels, or light colors such as ivory, pink, or blue! If two adults are in the photo, it helps to coordinate their outfits. For example, one person wears a patterned dress, and another wears a solid-colored shirt.
Adding Accessories
Don’t forget about accessories! They can add texture and interest to an otherwise plain outfit. Layers are great options for adding some extra flair—make sure they aren’t too distracting from the main focus of the photo (i.e., your face!). Timeless jewelry and watches can also look nice – don’t forget to take off those Apple watches.
Ask your Photographer for Advice on What to Wear for Spring Family Pictures
You can trust your photographer to help with anything from what outfit works best for their shooting style, locations that will bring out the best of your portrait, poses that flatter your body type, and tips on hairstyles and makeup. They have technical skills and know how to make people feel at ease during the shoot, so you don’t have to worry about being uncomfortable or awkward. Trust your portrait photographer to help you choose the right outfits for your session.
