Getting Dressed Shouldn’t Be the Hardest Part of Family Photos
If you’ve ever tried to coordinate outfits for your whole family in the fall, you might know the feeling. Standing in front of the closet (again), scrolling Pinterest (again), and second-guessing every sweater in your house. As a professional photographer and a mom, I’ve been on both sides of this struggle.
And yes, I help style families all the time. But I won’t lie, putting together outfits for my own family’s photos is a challenge. Way harder.
The good news? I’ve crafted an entire photo experience that removes the overwhelm from wardrobe planning, especially for moms who want everyone clean, dressed, and smiling (at least once). If you’re looking for what to wear for fall family photos in Indianapolis, continue reading for practical tips and styling advice.
Why Fall Wardrobe Choices Really Matter
Fall in Indiana is gorgeous! It’s filled with glowing golden trees, crisp air, and soft natural light. But those rich backgrounds can easily clash with bold outfit choices. I’ve seen it firsthand: beautiful scenery upstaged by neon tops or overly busy patterns.
That’s why wardrobe is more than “what looks cute.” It’s an essential part of creating timeless, glowy, heirloom-worthy photographs that feel like your family – just a little more elevated.
If you love my photography style, the lightness and warmth you love starts with the clothes you choose to wear. That’s why every full photo session with me includes hands-on styling guidance and access to my curated client closet.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos: Tried-and-True Tips
1. For Moms: Light, Flowy, and Flattering
I always recommend a midi or maxi dress in a soft, neutral tone. Dresses tend to flatter in motion and photograph beautifully. My client closet includes sizes XS–3XL, with maternity-friendly options and styles that feel elegant without being fussy.
- Colors: creams, taupe, browns, blush, muted olive, dusty blue
- Fabrics: cotton gauze, lace, chiffon (textures add visual interest!)
- If you’re wearing your own, avoid bright neons or dark blacks – they don’t complement fall’s rich tones and can affect skin tones in photos.
Pro tip: professional hair and makeup always helps photos pop (I offer optional HMU recommendations if you’d like that extra confidence boost). Doing your own? Bump up your blush and lip shade just a bit more than usual.

2. For Littles: Rompers, Dresses & Texture
I stock wardrobe options for babies and toddlers up to size 5T, with thoughtful outfits that avoid itchy fabrics or complicated fasteners (hi, tantrum prevention). Here’s what I recommend for girl and boy babies and toddlers:
- Baby girls: neutral or dainty floral rompers layered with textured or knit tights.
- Toddler girls: light-colored or soft patterned dresses, and a knit cardigan if it’s cold.
- Baby boys: overalls, 2 piece knit outfits, and rompers are great
- Toddler boys: Khakis and a button down, henley, or cute sweater.
- Accessories: small bows, boots, vests – great for layering and comfort
Shoes should be neutral and comfortable, like mary janes, boots, or loafers.
3. For the Guys: Classic, Not Stuffy
Dads (and energetic sons) are often the trickiest to dress, but keeping it simple is key.
- Tops: button-ups, Henleys, and sweaters in cream, light brown, soft gray, green, light blue.
- Bottoms: khakis or light denim (avoid dark pants if possible)
- Layers: textured sweaters, suspenders, or a soft blazer can step things up without overdressing
Skip polo shirts and visible logos. They tend to distract and feel too casual for the timeless images we aim for. Ditch the smart watch for a classic dress watch.
4. Coordination (Not Matching)
Instead of everyone in beige, aim for a balanced palette.
- Start with 1–2 main colors and build around them using neutrals
- Mix textures: lace, knits, cottons, linen
- Add variation with delicate prints or soft accessories
These tips create harmony and depth without looking matchy-matchy. If anything is stressing you out when it comes to prepping outfits, let me help. That’s part of what I do before the session – making sure you have one less thing on your overflowing to-do list.

Because Family Moments Are Worth Remembering Beautifully with Photos
As moms, we can get very sucked into trying to achieve the perfect photo look. At the end of the day, if it’s totally stressing you out, the outfits do not need to be perfect.
Fall family photos are about documenting the season your family is in. Whether it’s the toddler’s curls, your baby clinging to your shoulder, or the genuine laughter over throwing leaves, these candid moments matter. While clothing helps set the tone, it’s really the comfort and ease that create the magic.
This is why I prioritize styling support for every family I work with. With your vision, my guidance, and a little planning, we’ll create photos that don’t just look beautiful, they feel like you.
