Carmel Ice Skadium has been a beloved Carmel institution for the past 40 years. This ice-skating rink makes it easy to throw on some blades and just get going. Anyone is able to check out their rink thanks to their public skating nights. Kids under the age of 10 get a special discount, and skates are available for rent. The ice rink turns up the tunes and creates a welcoming environment where both beginners and seasoned skaters can have a great time. If you’re looking to switch things up, check out their cosmic skating, which happens almost every Friday and Saturday. They swap out the stadium lights in favor of theatrical lighting and special effects. Grab your besties and come out to dance along to fun music!

If you’re working to prioritize your fitness this year, you have to check out Hoosier Heights in Indianapolis! This climbing gym is beginner-friendly and will make sure your first time scaling the walls is actually fun. For the really dedicated, the gym offers memberships, but even casual adventurers can check it out with a day pass. While people of all ages will enjoy their time, the center has a youth climbing club that meets several times a week. These sessions are ideal for ages 7-12 and use game-based activities to introduce your child to the sport. For the really dedicated, the gym offers teams that let you compete on a national level. The center offers gear rental, including shoes, harnesses, carabiners, and belay passes.

When you have younger kids, a favorite local park is an absolute must. It’s the perfect way to get them fresh air while letting them run out of their endless amounts of energy. If you need a new place to try out this year, check out the Westermeier Commons. The entire park rests on over 25,000 square feet and offers several play areas for children of all ages. They give your child the chance to climb, swing, slide, jump, and run. The playground for younger kids is nestled alongside the larger area but is contained by a small rock wall, so you can easily supervise siblings at either location. There’s also a splash pad and open fields just waiting to be explored.

Once the weather heats up, the best place to be is The Waterpark located just down the boardwalk from Westermeier Commons. The park is full of premium attractions guaranteed to keep you cool. There are water slides for riders 48” and up that you can ride either with or without a tube. A lazy river runs throughout the park and lets you see the area at your own speed. The FlowRider gives you the chance to try your hand at surfing without ever leaving Indiana. There’s also a lap and activity pool. Grab a bite to eat at the concession stands and enjoy a premium ice cream cone beneath the cabanas. There’s an additional kiddie pool that lets kids under 48” have a great time without worrying about older visitors.

Cool Creek Park is one of the top options when it comes to getting out in nature. The park rests on over 90 acres and has plenty of wildlife to explore. There are over 4 miles of wooded trails that let you choose how long you’d like to hike. The nature center is open every day and teaches you all about the importance of preservation. There’s a play area that incorporates natural elements so your child can have unstructured time to explore the world around them. The park includes soccer fields and a basketball court. If you want to pack a lunch, there are picnic tables and shelters for a scenic meal. Keep an eye on the schedule because the music pavilion will host live musical acts the entire family will adore.

The Museum of Miniature Houses offers some of the most impressive and adorable exhibits in the state. The museum is one of the few of its kind, offering thousands of tiny displays. The museum holds its exhibits to the highest standards and requires complete historical accuracy. They cycle through the exhibits so you can have a fresh experience every time you visit. When you schedule a tour, you’ll find works from both experts and amateurs. Check out the mini libraries exhibit- created in association with the Carmel Clay Public Library- built by local teens, or view the meticulously created Victorian tripod camera by artists Nancy and AJ Quinby. There are tiny kitchens, modern living rooms, and Southwest trading posts. You can use their magnifying glasses to get a closer look at each display. The museum has created scavenger hunts for kids, and they offer a free audio tour.
