In‑Home vs. Studio Newborn Photos: Which Option Fits Your Family Best?

When you’re sleep-deprived, covered in spit-up, and wondering how the days are already blurring together, planning newborn photos may feel like just one more thing to manage. Then the big question creeps in: Should we have them in the studio, or should we just stay home?
As an Indianapolis newborn photographer (and a mom who knows just how strange those early weeks are), I get this question all the time. The answer is personal preference, since there’s no wrong choice. There is a better fit, depending on your season of life, your personality, and what you want the photos to look like.
Let me lead you through what I’ve learned from photographing plenty of fresh little humans in both spaces. Also, how one new mom reminded me just how meaningful that choice can be.
When Home Says More Than a Studio Ever Could
I recently photographed a beautiful first-time mama who lived about an hour and a half from my studio. Right away, we knew a studio session would mean an early departure, packed bags, and a sleepy baby buckled in for a long drive. However, there was something else. She had put love and care into designing her baby’s nursery. It was filled with family heirlooms and meaningful keepsakes. When she told me how special it would be to document that space, the decision became clear. We made the session happen at her home, with a rocking chair, embroidered blankets, and all.
Those photos? They now have pieces of her story in every frame.

What to Consider: Mom’s preferences, the Light, and the Look
At first glance, staying home may sound like the easier route. But in reality, deciding between an in-home or studio newborn session is less about convenience and more about aesthetics, emotion, and how you want to remember this fleeting season.
In both settings, I provide the same signature experience – dreamy neutral wardrobe options, newborn accessories, and soft, natural posing that honors your baby just as they are. But the feel of the session, and quite honestly, your energy during it, changes a bit depending on the location.
Here’s what I walk families through when we’re figuring it out together:

In-Home vs. Studio: What You Don’t Always See Coming
1. You Don’t Have to Prepare for This
In-home sounds easier. But often, it’s not.
Even if I remind you not to clean for me, most moms still find themselves tidying three rooms “just in case.” You’re hosting, even when I promise you don’t need to be.
A studio session, on the other hand? You walk in, and everything is already styled, beautifully lit, and ready. I take care of the setup, the flow, the wardrobe, and yes – even baby’s accessories.
Sometimes, the biggest gift you can give yourself is just showing up.
2. Lighting Makes a Big Difference
Light is one of the most underrated factors when choosing a location for a newborn session. Your photos are only as soft and organic as the light that fills the space.
- At the studio: I control the direction, tone, and timing of the light. The results are consistent and timeless.
- At home, we’re working with what your space offers. I always walk through your home and choose the best lighting spots. However, so many factors go into how the lighting and colors in the photos will look. For example, the color of the walls, the color of the floors, the direction of the windows, the size of the windows, and more!
Neither is bad – they just give a different feel. But it’s important to know that I can’t exactly replicate bright, natural light in every home.
3. Aesthetic vs. Authenticity: What’s Your Priority?
- Studio photos are minimal and curated. They age beautifully because they don’t show clutter, trends, or distractions. They’re heirloom-ready in every way.
- In-home photos reflect your real life right now. That beloved but worn rocking chair in the corner? The family dog snoozing beside the crib? That’s your real story: messy, meaningful, and flawless in its own right.

So… Which One Fits You?
If you’re dreaming of polished, light and bright, consistent imagery, the studio may be your safe haven.
If you’ve spent a great deal of time creating the perfect nursery, and you want your baby’s first pictures in your own space, an in-home newborn session would be right for you.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. What matters most is that you come out of that session with photographs you’ll love forever – and that you walk away feeling seen, supported, and never rushed.
