If you’re pregnant and considering a maternity photoshoot, you might wonder if a studio or outdoor session is the right choice. There are pros and cons to consider before deciding, and here are a few things to keep in mind when planning a maternity photoshoot in Indianapolis.
I’m participating in a blog circle this month and linking to the sweetest photographer in Portland! Check out that link at the end of the post.
Pro: Stunning background options for a maternity photoshoot in Indianapolis
When you’re photographing outdoors, nature provides a stunning background. I love shooting at local parks with fresh flowers and fields that provide my clients with excellent maternity picture background options. Whether you’re looking for something romantic or whimsical, there’s sure to be an outdoor setting that fits your vision.
I have a selection of stunning outdoor locations already vetted and chosen for you. When you book a maternity session with me, we will discuss your vision and style, and from there, I’ll recommend locations that are best suited to your style.

Con: Potential for lousy weather or wrong time of year
Of course, bad weather is always possible when you book an outdoor photoshoot, and you might have to reschedule if it’s raining or too hot on the day of your shoot. That said, most photographers are happy to work around inclement weather and will do their best to ensure you get the photos you want.
Also, it’s best to take maternity photos around 30-34 weeks of pregnancy, which may be the dead cold of winter in Indy! In that case, you may consider a gorgeous studio session instead. My studio is located in Westfield, Indiana, and is cozy and warm year-round, especially if you want to bundle maternity photos with newborn photography.
Lastly, if you have other young children, you may consider a studio session based on sleep schedules. Outdoor sessions take place around sunset, so depending on the time of year, that may interrupt their nightly routine. However, most toddlers do great with outdoor sessions since something new and exciting happens, but only you know your babies best. There are a few things to consider, but I’ll discuss them with you and recommend the best option based on your circumstances.

Pro: Stunning outdoor natural light
There’s nothing quite like the beauty of natural light, and that’s especially true when it comes to maternity photography. The soft, ethereal quality of sunlight can help to document the special bond between mother and child. Whether it’s the warm glow of the setting sun or the gentle light of a summer morning, maternity photographers know how to make the most of every precious moment.
Con: You could get self-conscious about having others watching
Pregnancy can be difficult physically and emotionally, so it’s natural that you might not always feel confident in front of the camera. You may get some people around at local parks who will see you during the photoshoot. For complete privacy, you may consider a studio photoshoot instead. The studio may be the right choice if you’re looking for a more intimate maternity or breastfeeding session.
