As a specialist in Indianapolis family photography, I know that watching your toddler explore and learn new things is terrific as a parent. It’s a fantastic experience that passes by so quickly, and that’s why it can be such a gift to document those moments. Here are five tips to help you photograph the beauty of watching your toddler grow and develop.
5 Tips to Great Indianapolis Family Photography
Tip 1: Get Down on The Toddler’s Level
When photographing toddlers, it’s essential to get down on their level so that you can document the world as they see it. Try taking photos at their eye level or lower if you can manage. This perspective will photograph their unique perspective into their world and make for some incredible shots.
Tip 2: Let Toddlers Play
Toddlers are full of energy, so rather than trying to wrangle them into one pose after another, let them explore and play in whatever setting works best for them. You may be surprised at just how many precious moments unfold when you let your toddlers roam free! In my photography sessions with toddlers, I love to play games with the kids and keep them moving. For example, ring around the rosie is one of the games we may play at your session. It gets the best toddler expressions!
Tip 3: Make Sure the Focus is Clear
While toddlers are always on the move, adjusting your camera’s focus before each shot can help ensure that all those special moments remain crystal clear in your photos. A blurry image may still be cute but not nearly as unique as capturing every detail in perfect clarity. If you’re working with a DSLR or professional camera, make sure your shutter speed is fast enough to document those fast-moving toddlers.
Tip 4: Don’t Overthink Photographing Toddlers
Photography isn’t always about perfection; sometimes, documenting those imperfectly perfect moments makes a photo special. So don’t worry about getting that perfect shot. Go with the flow and enjoy documenting every aspect of your toddler’s journey. Above all else, remember that photography should be fun. Don’t stress about getting the ideal shot every time. Have fun with it, and enjoy spending quality time with your little one while making memories together!
Tip 5: Book a Photographer who Specializes in Family Photography
Smartphones are great for everyday moments, but once or twice a year, it’s best to invest in a photographer who specializes in family photography. Since usually, it’s the mom taking the photographs, hiring a professional photographer allows everyone to be in the photos. Also, I include borrows from my client closet and styling assistance for the whole family in each session, which takes the stress out of figuring out what to wear. These precious photographs are great for hanging on the wall or cherishing in a family heirloom album.
