As a mom-to-be, maternity photos are an exciting and beautiful part of your pregnancy journey. You’ll want to look back at these precious memories for years to come, so it is essential that you feel confident and comfortable in your pictures. As a Fishers photographer in Indiana, I’m here to help make sure that happens! You can find the perfect ensemble for your photoshoot with the right clothing choices and accessories. Here I have compiled some tips on what to wear for your milestone family portraits – from choosing flattering silhouettes to accessorizing professionally. Let’s get started!
Selecting a Color Palette for Maternity Photos by Fishers Photographer
The first step to planning a stylish maternity session is deciding on a color palette for photos. You want colors that reflect personal style and journey. Consider the colors you gravitate towards when decorating your home. We want to aim for timeless color palettes that won’t go out of style. Soft neutral, or pastel tones, can warm maternity photos and make the session feel special. For those who prefer something bolder, jewel tones like rich blues and vibrant greens can give maternity photos a luxe look. My favorite color palettes to photograph are creams and warm neutrals with beautiful textures that photograph beautifully and never go out of style.

Consider your Location and the Season for Photos
When it comes to maternity photos, it’s essential to consider the specific type of environment and season you’d like for your pictures. Considering the best time to take maternity photos is around 30 weeks, depending on the location and time of year, different backdrops and settings can make all the difference in documenting unforgettable moments. If you’re looking for a winter wonderland vibe, consider taking outdoor maternity photos when there’s snow on the ground. Yet, consider a studio maternity session to keep kids warm and happy if you have older children. We will discuss your vision and needs for the session so I can make recommendations for a studio or outdoor nature session. You can read more about the pros and cons of an outdoor maternity session.

Choose Flattering Clothes for Maternity Photos
Finding the right maternity look for photos can sometimes feel overwhelming, but there’s no need to worry! There are lots of maternity clothing items out there that work perfectly for embracing your ever-changing body during pregnancy. Light colors such as whites or pastels are flattering, especially when paired with an effortless and floating fabric like chiffon. Also, comfortable pieces like maxi dresses will give you a stunning silhouette while ensuring you’re not uncomfortable in front of the camera. Some of my favorite places to shop for bump friendly dresses are free people, baltic born, and vici. As part of all my sessions, my clients have access to my client closet, a curated collection of dresses for pregnant moms-to-be.

Accessorize Maternity Photos
Pregnancy is a time of joy and anticipation, and maternity pictures are the perfect way to commemorate this particular time. Accessorizing maternity images with the right jewelry, hats, or flowers can take them to the next level, highlighting your unique style and personality. Whether you go for a glamorous look with statement pieces or something more whimsical and romantic, you’ll surely capture the beauty of expecting motherhood in stunning maternity photography! I always recommend dainty, timeless jewelry to my clients.
