How to Choose the Perfect Dress for Your Newborn Photoshoot

When choosing a dress for your newborn photos, look for something simple and comfortable. Neutral colors like ivory, beige, and blush keep the focus on you and your baby. When choosing dresses from my studio wardrobe, I look for dresses with sleeves. A flowy fit over the stomach is very flattering postpartum. Try to avoid anything super form-fitting.

Top Dress Ideas for Moms in Newborn Photos

1. Free People – Oasis Midi Dress

The flowy silhouette and smocked bodice are very forgiving postpartum and give that boho vibe. I have this one in tons of colors and prints in my studio wardrobe. It’s equal parts effortless and flattering. It’s the dress version of dry shampoo and a latte.

2. Christy Dawn – The Katrina Dress

Organic cotton, a gentle shape, and a square neckline that looks stunning in portraits. It has an adjustable waist tie for a tailored fit and a flow bodice that comfortably covers any postpartum belly. Christy Dawn always nails that “vintage but modern” feeling.

5. Free People – Plenty of Love Maxi

The name alone captures my attention. This Free People dress is perfect for studio sessions with soft lighting, allowing for all those intricate newborn details to shine. The flow of the dress creates the most beautiful movement in photos. Plus, it’s also a fantastic choice for maternity!

6. Selkie – The Renfaire Dress

If you’re the kind of mama who wants to feel like a literal queen, here’s your gown. The Selkie puff sleeves and luxe fabric turn newborn portraits into actual artwork. Not for the faint of heart, but for the bold, beautiful, “I just birthed a human” goddess.

7. DÔEN – The Ischia Dress

Whimsical, romantic, and just the right amount of prairie-chic. DÔEN’s cuts are forgiving but never frumpy. Their fabrics are light enough to keep you comfy (even if you’re running on 3 hours of sleep and one-handed snacks).

8. Needle & Thread – Fantasy Peaches Smocked Ankle Gown

This one’s pure fairy tale. If your vision includes florals and soft pastels, this gown delivers.
