What to Expect from Your Carmel Indiana Newborn Photography Session

Bringing home a newborn is a whirlwind. Between sleepless nights, figuring out feeding, and remembering to drink your water, it can be easy to forget you might want to preserve this time. I remember when my son was born, I hired a photographer. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. I had no idea what to wear, how long it would take, or even if I’d be in the photos. If I could gently guide that new-mama version of myself, I would.
Now, as a professional photographer (and a mom who’s been through those hazy postpartum days twice), I’m here to do exactly that for you. Whether you’re considering a studio session in Carmel, Indiana, or something a little more laid-back in your own home, allow me to walk you through what you can truly expect during your newborn photography experience with me.
A Gentle Beginning: Planning Your Session
You’re not supposed to have it all figured out right now. That’s my job. From the start, I offer a 30-minute planning meeting to talk through every detail before your session. Yep, we start with the practical things like:
- Choosing between a cozy in-home lifestyle session or my bright, white studio in Westfield.
- Walking through my planning guide step-by-step, so you always know what’s coming.
- Consider the colors in your home when picking outfits, keeping future wall art in mind.
- Helping you finalize outfits from my fully stocked client closet (I’ve got over 60 dresses just for women, plus clothing for little ones up to 5T).
- If you want to add on professional hair and makeup.
The planning meeting is also when we dream a little. Do you love soft, blurry portraits that feel like memories or more classic shots with everyone smiling? Let’s talk about what matters most to you. And if there’s a special keepsake you want to include (a wedding veil, a family quilt, your grandmother’s rosary), bring it along. I’ll thoughtfully incorporate it into your images when I can.

What Happens on the Day of Your Session
You arrive at the studio or get ready at home (zero pressure to impress me – yoga pants welcome), and the first thing we do is check in. We’ll chat about how you’re feeling postpartum, how baby’s been doing, and if there’s anything medically or physically I should know before gently posing your little one.
Safety always comes first. I use slow, natural movements that honor your baby’s needs and cues. No rigid wrappings or elaborate props here. Your baby gets to move freely and stay comfortable.
At the studio, you’ll get to try on your preferred wardrobe pieces and find the dress that makes you feel beautiful – yes, even on three hours of sleep. I’ve helped many a mom rediscover her glow with the right outfit and supportive direction.
In-home sessions are more relaxed and casual. I’ll focus on photographing you in 1-2 areas of your home (usually the nursery and living room or kitchen). We use the natural light and your everyday surroundings to create something simple and real, especially if siblings want to show me their favorite toys mid-session (which is always welcome).
How I Guide the Session – No Guesswork Needed
Here’s what we’ll typically do:
- Start with photos of the baby alone in natural, cozy positions
- Move into family shots – the full crew, siblings, baby with each parent
- Back to your newborn again, capturing a couple more sweet, heartfelt images
- No crates, no bowls, just tiny toes, fuzzy heads, sleepy yawns, and real connection
The whole session usually takes 90 minutes to 3 hours. Unrushed, but efficient. We follow your baby’s lead, with plenty of breaks for nursing, diapers, or just cuddles. I’m not watching the clock, and neither should you.

After the Session: The Best Part
About two to three weeks after your session, we’ll schedule your ordering meeting. You’ll get to see your edited images and decide which collection best fits your needs. Whether you’re curating a custom gallery wall, designing a keepsake album, or selecting framed prints for grandparents, I’ll guide you through it all.
You’ll already have a clear understanding of pricing and products from our first meeting, so this moment really gets to be what it should be – fun, emotional, full of “aww” moments, and maybe a few happy tears.

Why Newborn Photos Matter
Newborns don’t keep, as the saying goes. You’re living in a season of transition, of tenderness, of story-making every single day. And it deserves to be preserved – not in a digital folder you’ll forget, but as something real you can hold.
I know from experience (and from the regret of not knowing what to expect the first time) that these sessions are more than a few cute photos. They are the visual legacy of your family’s beginnings. And I promise to treat that with the care and creativity it deserves.
